Butterbeer is undoubtedly a staple of Universal Studios. Whether you prefer the hot, cold, or frozen variant, it’s hard to deny that it makes for a creamy and sweet treat, especially after walking thousands of steps at the park. This led me to wonder: is it possible to recreate Butterbeer with simple ingredients at home? Based on this recipe I found, the answer seems to be yes!

Ingredients List

Drink Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of cream soda (preferably cold/chilled)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup butterscotch or caramel syrup

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Cool Whip
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon caramel or butterscotch syrup (plus additional for drizzling)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix the Cool Whip, powdered sugar, and butterscotch/caramel syrup until smooth and fluffy. Keep refrigerated while preparing the rest of the drink.
  2. Combine the 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract with the 1/4 cup of butterscotch/caramel syrup in a separate container.
  3. Pour the chilled cream soda into the container and begin to gently stir until all ingredients combine. Stirring too aggressively can make the soda lose its carbonation.
  4. Divide the mixture among four separate glasses. Be sure to add the whipped topping to each glass and drizzle additional butterscotch/caramel syrup for some extra flavor.

Although I haven’t actually tried this homemade butterbeer for myself, I’ll be sure to report my thoughts on the recipe in next Wednesday’s article! Let me know what you think of the recipe in the comments!
