Myth Monday: The Truth Behind The Infamous Bigfoot Footage

Happy November! For my first Myth Monday post, I’ll cover the recent revelation surrounding the infamous 1967 Bigfoot footage. For believers, this footage has long been considered some of the most convincing evidence of Sasquatch’s existence. However, newly uncovered footage and some interesting admissions suggest that the entire video was a hoax.
Thanks to the efforts of the documentary Capturing Bigfoot, newly uncovered test footage of the video in question has been found. According to the documentary, filmmaker Roger Patterson was notoriously obsessed with the legend prior and was planning to create a pseudo-documentary on the legend.
The test footage, which is believed to have been shot a year before in 1966, was ultimately scrapped by Patterson due to Bigfoot appearing too human-like. Many also claim that a noticeable zipper can be seen on the back of the costume.
Facing financial troubles, Patterson decided to reshoot the sighting in 1967 and sell it entirely as being real. He reportedly hired his friend Bob Heironimus to take over the role of Sasquatch. According to Heironimus, Patterson chose him for the role because of his distinct gait, which he was told to exaggerate for the film. Patterson also reportedly told Heironimus he would be paid $1,000 for his efforts, which Heironimus claims never came.
It is worth noting that believers argue that the footage is actually a later reenactment rather than a test shooting. Many also believe the “costume” shown in the original footage is too detailed and anatomically accurate to have been faked.
