What Happens to Daredevil After Born Again?

Fans of Disney’s Daredevil: Born Again were shocked to see the announcement that Season 3 would be its last. This is familiar territory for fans, as the original Netflix incarnation met the same fate. With so many other characters and storylines unexplored in live-action, many are asking what the future of the MCU’s Daredevil will be like. Today, I’d like to discuss what direction I think Disney will take the character.

DOOMSDAY OR SECRET WARS APPEARANCE

This option seems likely, considering the abundance of characters Marvel will attempt to include in this saga. Between the two films, I think it is more likely for Daredevil to show up in Secret Wars. Unless Marvel planned a Daredevil cameo in Doomsday well in advance, it feels too “early” for an appearance (especially since reshoots for Born Again Season 3 are reportedly underway). Regardless of which film Daredevil shows up in, an appearance would allow for some interesting opportunities.

For example, as we know from Brand New Day’s post-credit scene, Spider-Man is highly likely to be involved in the fight against Dr. Doom. Considering Matt and Peter have already “met” in No Way Home (albeit with their civilian identities), Marvel could finally give us a true MCU team-up between Spider-Man and Daredevil.

Alternatively, considering Bullseye is rumored to be joining the Thunderbolts team, the dynamic of Matt and Bullseye working together again would be nice to see on the big screen. In general, it would be interesting to see characters from Born Again interacting with the larger Marvel Universe.

Matt could also be used in this saga to springboard his next project.

DAREDEVIL MOVIE

A standalone Daredevil film has been rumored for many years. Certain internet leakers claim that Charlie Cox’s contract specifies a certain number of show appearances before a standalone film can be made. While this is not confirmed, if true, the decision to cancel Born Again could have potentially been made to prioritize this hypothetical movie.

If done well, a Daredevil film could truly be the next step for the character, instead of a stock guest appearance in the Doomsday saga. Like Brand New Day, it should be a street-level film. However, the film should prioritize new villains for Daredevil to face.

Even though Vincent D’Onofrio’s exceptional performance as Wilson Fisk is a fan favorite, fans still want to see Matt take on other enemies from his coterie. Interesting examples would include The Owl (the choice of villain for the original Daredevil season 4), Typhoid Mary (possibly after a retcon of Iron Fist’s version?), and Mr. Fear.

As alluded to before with the Doomsday section, it would also be nice to see Matt teaming up with other heroes. The obvious two would be Spider-Man and Punisher (maybe even all three considering the Frank and Peter’s shared dynamic in Brand New Day). I also think it would be interesting to see a team-up between Daredevil and Yelena.

If Daredevil does work with the Thunderbolts in the Doomsday saga, then this would be a great way to follow up on that dynamic. If they do not interact in those films, then this hypothetical movie could introduce the relationship. Perhaps it could even develop into something more, considering the comic relationship between Matt and the original Black Widow, Natasha.

While the previous two options would create some exciting moments for Daredevil fans, this last option is scarily realistic, even if it is disappointing.

REDUCED TO MCU CAMEOS

Delegating Daredevil to basic cameos would be extremely disappointing, as there’s still plenty to do with the character. Marvel would essentially revert Matt’s character to what it was before the launch of Born Again.

Ultimately, I think the best option would be a standalone Daredevil movie supported by smaller appearances leading up to it. This way, fans can see what the character has been up to after the end of BA, while still building up plot elements for the movie.

I hope that Marvel will see the overwhelming disappointment over Born Again’s cancellation and devise a “fix” that will appeal to everyone.

Do you think Daredevil will make a surprise appearance in the Doomsday saga? What villain should Marvel pick for a Daredevil movie? Let me know in the comments!
