Macabre Monday: DC’s Clayface Offers a Surprising Box Office Upset

This weekend’s box office numbers show a surprising upset for DC’s Clayface, which has surpassed You Can See Everything to attain the number one spot. With a $44 million production budget, Clayface has recouped these expenses with earnings of $24.5 million domestically and $19 million internationally. This allowed the film to overtake YCSE’s strong second weekend of $19.5 million domestically.
Surprisingly, Clayface has seen a weaker start compared to Supergirl, which grossed $68 million on its opening weekend. However, Supergirl failed to break even with its $300 million budget, grossing only $ 220 million. Since Clayface was produced on a much smaller budget, its success serves as a testament to the popularity of more character-driven genre pieces, even in an expansive world like the DCU.

In terms of critical reception, the movie is also remaining strong. Currently holding a 76% from critics and a 94% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers seem to agree that the film is a welcome change in genre from the average superhero flick, offering a grounded and darker take on the titular Batman villain.
It seems likely that the movie’s general online reception and word-of-mouth are carrying Clayface past the usual comic book movie crowd. If this momentum continues, the film could very well become the king of the 2026 Halloween box office.
