A couple of days ago, DC released its first official clip from Clayface. Here are my (quick) thoughts on what they’ve shown before the film’s release later this month.

Truthfully, this clip doesn’t show off any major plot points or groundbreaking scenes. Still, I can appreciate its appropriately moody cinematography mixed with some disturbing body horror toward the end. Based on the released footage so far, I can confidently say that DC nailed both of these aspects. This makes sense when you consider the movie reportedly evolved from being a spinoff in Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise.

As I mentioned before, I especially like how the film’s marketing and footage seem to lean into its body horror. It’s a subgenre of horror that truly stands out when executed well, as demonstrated by The Substance. On top of that, Clayface’s newly secured R-rating suggests a more mature approach to its horror elements. Instead of toning things down for general audiences, DC is seemingly establishing a darker, more grounded take on the character as a future foe for the DCU’s Batman (whenever he is cast)!

I also think the October 23 release date was a smart decision by Warner Bros. Considering the mixed reception at best to some of October’s other releases, Horror fans desperately want a new horror movie with actual merit. Thus, if Clayface delivers on its promising marketing, it could become a standout release right before Halloween.
