Epic Games’ recent push towards Generative AI has made many fans worried about the future of Fortnite, as well as the studio itself. Most of this worry stems from Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s public posts on Twitter, which seemingly have done little to reassure an already frustrated community. Today, I’ll explain what sparked this controversy and what it could mean for Epic Games moving forward.

On October 12th, industry insider Jason Schreier revealed that Epic was working on a standalone Disney game that would feature both Star Wars and Marvel characters. This game, which was originally scheduled to release in March of this year, has now been delayed to an unspecified date. Development is now set to almost completely restart through an “AI-first workflow”.

This revelation understandably worried fans of the company and Fortnite. Still, some maintained hope that Epic would simply use the technology to improve productivity in the coding process. However, this optimism quickly turned out to be misguided. As opposed to traditional game development, Schreier stated that Epic employees will now guide and manage AI to create the game’s code and visuals.

While many were still processing that news, Tim Sweeney announced later that day that Epic would be adopting “maximum AI acceleration” company-wide. To Sweeney, this would herald a new “golden age of gaming“. These comments quickly led to immense anger, confusion, and disappointment among many Fortnite fans in the comments.

A vocal portion of the community is clearly concerned about the game’s future under an AI-first workflow. In a game often heralded for its creativity, the prospect of Fortnite trading human ingenuity for AI-generated content is cause for concern. This feeling is only compounded by Epic Games’ recent layoffs of 1,000 employees. Unfortunately, Tim Sweeney’s additional posts have done anything but reassure fans.

Ever since mid-October, Sweeney has argued with community notes over KFC, described the sentiment towards AI as a “massive hater campaign for developers“, and has shared and retweeted countless other agreeing viewpoints on the matter. A particularly concerning retweeted post seemingly argues that “anti-AI people” would disagree with a child receiving a cure for cancer if it utilized AI, instead letting the child “die by traditional means”.

The backlash by fans towards these comments highlights a recent shift in the gaming industry, one that prioritizes a never-ending stream of content instead of individual creativity. Besides the AI sphere increasingly becoming unsustainable, it’s clear that gamers do not want their games to rely this heavily on generative AI.

While some companies sparingly use the technology without interfering with their creative process, Epic is crossing a line that many consumers simply do not agree with. Only time will tell how much of an impact this decision will have on Epic Games, even though the situation already appears bleak.
