Terror Tuesday: Will DC’s Clayface Dominate the October Box Office?
The state of horror movies this October seems relatively strong, but the biggest wild card release is arguably DC Studios’ Clayface. Many DC fans are questioning the decision to give the titular character his own film before establishing mainline heroes (such as Batman and Wonder Woman). Still, both die-hard and casual fans hope that Clayface is at least a respectable body-horror film with a superhero twist. Ultimately, though, what matters most is the film’s box office performance. Based on recent projections, the film will seemingly do ok.
Currently, analysts predict that Clayface will have an opening weekend in the $20 million range. Considering the film was made on a budget of $40 million, that would be a relatively modest opening. Compared to the higher-budget release of Supergirl, Clayface is a considerably less risky investment for Warner Bros. It is also more likely to be profitable if early reviews seem promising. On top of that, the superhero branding makes it more likely to appeal to a wider range of consumers as opposed to die-hard horror fans. If reviews stay strong, I wouldn’t be surprised if Clayface dominates the box office in late October when it releases on the 23rd.
