Mario Day – New Lego Luigi Set + New Minifigure Review!
Happy MAR10 Day to everyone! It has admittedly been a quieter year for Nintendo when it comes to large Mario-themed announcements from the brand. However, there were still some decently big announcements for LEGO fans. Specifically, we got two major announcements (one for a certain set, and another for a brand new wave of Mario sets!).

In terms of the new Luigi Set, it features Luigi driving a “Mach 8 Kart”. Visually, it is very similar to the Mario Kart set released earlier last year. Like that set, the “kart” Luigi is driving also derives from Mario Kart 8. I found this surprising, as Mario Kart World has been an established Switch 2 launch title for a few months. However, considering the monumental success of Mario Kart 8 (especially compared to World), I suppose it is not entirely surprising.

As for specifics, the set is over 10 inches tall, consists of over 2,300 pieces, and will officially release on April 1st (just in time for the release of the Mario Galaxy movie). For parents/adults that might be interested in purchasing the set, it is worth noting that it will be on the more pricier side (costing over $180 USD). However, I would argue that this price is generally reasonable considering the number of pieces that the set includes.
Although the set is labeled as being for adults/18+, there is still some interactivity with the wheels and flames, which seem to move freely as you “drive” Luigi around. These factors are nothing major, but still a nice touch. I also appreciate the set having a stand to balance on, as it keeps the set uniform with Mario (especially when both are near each other on a shelf or table).
Overall, I consider the “Luigi & Mach 8” set to be a well-built set and companion piece to “Mario & Standard Kart”. Although the set is somewhat pricy, the number of pieces and build time almost certainly make up for it. I would definitely consider purchasing this set in the future, and I hope we get other Kart racers in this style in the near future.
Additionally, LEGO and Nintendo came together to officially reveal the new LEGO Mario minifigure! Some may be disappointed that the new sets are arriving in 2027. However, I think it is very nice to finally see an official minifigure of Mario. I hope they follow this minifigure up with more characters in future sets. I am also very curious to see if these sets will somehow involve the newly developed Smart Brick system, phasing out the original LEGO Mario figure.
Regardless of the outcome, I am always excited to see two of my favorite brands crossing over to create something new and exciting. I hope we continue to get new LEGO Mario sets for years to come! Are you planning to pick up the new Luigi Kart set, or holding out for the 2027 Mario wave? Let me know in the comments below!
