Macabre Monday: Analyzing the Mid-October Box Office

This weekend’s box office numbers are in, and they paint a (mostly) unsurprising picture of this month’s theatrical releases. As most would expect, Other Mommy suffered a steep 70% drop at the box office during its second theatrical week. The real surprise of the month, however, is the smashing success of You Can See Everything.
Decidedly NOT a horror movie (although, as some commenters humorously pointed out, it can feel like one), the film has seen overwhelming praise/word of mouth from critics and audiences alike. Based on the glowing reviews it’s been receiving, the film seems like a “must-watch” this October.
In terms of the box office, You Can See Everything debuted to $15 million across a mere 855 screens. The success of YCSE’s limited release is particularly impressive in a month filled with blockbuster horror releases. Its strong opening suggests audiences are willing to show up for something different. In fact, the film secured the number two spot overall, easily beating out the weekend’s horror release, Whalefall.

This doesn’t mean that Whalefall has struggled critically, however. As I mentioned in my last article, the film actually received a reasonably positive reception from critics/audiences. Its box-office performance, on the other hand, is a different story. While the film debuted to $17 million worldwide on its opening weekend, only $8 million was domestic, compared to the large $60 million production budget. Whalefall clearly has a long way to go before recouping its production, marketing, and distribution costs.
Between Whalefall, Clayface, Wildwood, Crawlers, and You Can See Everything, moviegoers have an abundance of films to choose from during the final weeks of October. There is a little something for everyone, especially for fans of horror, documentaries, or something completely different.
