Frightful Friday: Whalefall VS. Crawlers – Which Is Worth Watching?

For today’s Frightful Friday post, I’m going to highlight two new horror movies that were released TODAY: Whalefall and Crawlers! Whalefall, which currently holds a solid 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, leans more toward being a thriller than pure horror.
Based on the novel of the same name, it stars Austin Abrams (hot off the success of Resident Evil) as deep-sea explorer Jay Gardiner. While searching for his father’s remains underwater, Gardiner abruptly gets swallowed by an 80-foot sperm whale with only an hour’s worth of oxygen left in his tank. Honestly, when I first heard of Whalefall, I dismissed it as a dime-a-dozen survival thriller that would come and go. However, its decent reception, combined with Abrams’ solid performance in Resident Evil, has convinced me this might be worth seeing in theatres.
Unlike Whalefall, Crawlers is definitely more of a “true” horror experience. Specifically, it is a creature feature about spiders, which does help it to stand out amongst other more generic plots. Crawlers’ reception is somewhat mixed, sitting at 59% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that doesn’t mean it still can’t be a fun creature film.

The movie follows building manager Serena (played by Matilda Lutz) as her apartment complex is raided by a horde of deadly, mutating spiders. Serena must protect the other residents from these spiders based on her knowledge of the complex while ignoring her arachnophobia. As I’m writing this, I realize the plot does sound somewhat outlandish. In my opinion, Crawlers definitely seems like a “wait-for-streaming” film rather than a “see this in theaters right away” one.
Will you be seeing either of these this October? If not, which one would you pick to see? Let me know in the comments!
