Macabre Monday: Wildwood Trailer Overview

With LAIKA’s Wildwood set to release in just a few weeks, it felt like the perfect time to review the film’s final trailer. For some context, Wildwood has been in development for over a decade, based on the novel of the same name. The film appears to be more in line with Laika’s earlier films, such as Coraline and Paranorman.
The trailer certainly seems to confirm this, even literally reminding viewers about Coraline halfway through. An area that makes Wildwood stand on its own, however, is the animation. Laika has always been masters of stop-motion animation, with this movie particularly showcasing some exceptional work in the genre. I especially found the scope of the fantasy world and its inhabitants impressive (considering it was all handmade by a group of FORTY-NINE animators).
Although I have never read the book it is based on, Wildwood’s premise also seems intriguing. The idea of a kid accidentally discovering and exploring an unknown world has been done many times before. Still, the film’s visual appeal combined with Laika’s strong track record makes me decently excited for Wildwood. If you’re interested in the film as well, be sure to catch it when it hits theatres on October 23rd!
