Terror Tuesday: Resident Evil’s Box Office Performance Revealed

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil garnered an impressive $108,000,000 across all markets in its opening weekend. For many, this proves the “curse” of poorly received video game movies/shows is truly a thing of the past. This is the eighth live-action RE movie, making its strong performance especially impressive (considering the franchise’s mixed history at the box office).
Thankfully, this momentum also shows no signs of stopping, as the film has just officially crossed $250 million worldwide. This means it is the third highest-grossing film in the franchise in just two weeks, while also having the highest reviews of the entire series.
Resident Evil fans are clearly connecting with Cregger’s easy-to-follow and comedic take on the RE universe. Even without using any mainline characters, he successfully made an immersive horror film that stays true to the games. It will be extremely interesting to see how this movie competes with other horror blockbusters, such as Other Mommy and Clayface.
