What Went Wrong With Marvel Tokon’s PC Port?

When Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was announced during PlayStation’s June 2025 State of Play, it was met with widespread hype from Marvel fans and the Fighting Game Community alike. Many were ecstatic that Arc System Works (mainly known for their work on Guilty Gear) would be giving their take on a Marvel fighter.

However, this hype quickly soured once the PC port of Tokon was made available just a few days ago. While issues are being addressed by the developers, the game’s shaky launch has led to veteran fighting game fans quitting or switching to the console version.

Unfortunately, Tokon’s PC issues directly impair performance. For instance, players have noticed Tokon’s unusually high CPU usage, with some suspecting that Sony’s systems and anti-cheat almost certainly contribute to the problem. In many cases, players have found their CPU to be entirely maxed out solely from Tokon. The previously mentioned anti-cheat has also proven to be incompatible on Linux and Steam Deck devices.

Because the game runs on Unreal Engine 5, Tokon has also faced reports of massive frame drops and issues with rollback netcode. While these issues aren’t exactly unique to UE, they are commonly exacerbated by the engine on PC.

Thankfully, the Tokon team has acknowledged these problems and is actively working on fixes. In fact, an update has already gone live at the time of writing, addressing several performance issues for certain systems. However, this poorly optimized launch has already left a bad taste in many players’ mouths. Currently, Tokon is sitting at a “Mixed” rating on Steam.

The situation is particularly unfortunate after reviewing Tokon’s otherwise positive reception. The PS5 version (which avoids these technical hiccups) currently stands at an 87 on Metacritic. Unfortunately, the fighting game genre relies heavily on consistent performance. Even minor frame drops or rollback issues can negatively affect the experience for competitive players.

This is perhaps best illustrated by prominent FGC figures (such as Maximillian Dood) uninstalling Tokon’s PC port. In his recent livestream of the game, Max explained how his issues with rollback netcode and sluggish performance make him “like the game significantly less”. When a pillar of the FGC (especially one who loves Marvel as much as Max) throws in the towel, it demonstrates how serious the situation has become.

In conclusion, it is good to see Arc System Works working as fast as possible to fix the flaws of Tokon’s PC port. While this proves the company is receptive to feedback, regaining the trust of PC players may prove much more difficult. As promising as Tokon is, its shaky launch could overshadow the launch of an otherwise superb Marvel fighting game.
