Earlier this week, it was announced that Gendy Tartakovsky finally secured a platform (specifically, Prime Video) to release his long-awaited Conan animated series. Gendy attempted to pitch this project to multiple animation studios since 2007, with plans falling through on all occasions. I have a few thoughts to share now that the project has been revived.

Conceptually, an animated Conan show sounds like a match made in heaven for Tartakovsky. Having previously made shows such as Samurai Jack and Primal (with the latter heavily resembling Conan at times), acquiring Genndy as the show’s lead is a no-brainer. Like Primal, the show will likely not pull any punches with violence. It will be awesome to see Conan’s brutal and savage combat mixed with Tartakovsky’s famously fast-paced action sequences.

Structurally, the show will likely resemble Samurai Jack or The Clone Wars mini-series. While these shows have a general overarching story tying them together, they also follow an episodic format. This format would work best for Conan, as he has always been a wandering adventurer. Plus, this format would make the series easily understandable for newcomers without extensive knowledge of Conan’s lore.

In terms of animation, we have yet to see any actual footage of the show. However, gauging by the art style used on the poster, it seems that Conan will once again employ Tartakovsky’s iconic art style. The artwork already looks more refined than some of Tartakovsky’s previous projects, with a striking visual identity that stands out in today’s animation landscape.

During the reveal, Genndy jokingly stated that he could show us some animatics by next year, and animation drafts even later than that. Hopefully, this statement is accurate, since I cannot wait to see this project come to fruition. This show does not seem to just be “another adaptation of Conan”. Rather, it feels like a culmination of Tartakovsky’s career. Conan’s influence can be seen throughout Samurai Jack and especially Primal, which makes this project feel like one he is destined to helm.

Are you excited for this new take on Conan? Will it be another project to add to Tartakovsky’s long list of successful shows? Let me know in the comments!
