Epic Games Layoffs Explained: What 1,000 Job Cuts Could Mean for Fortnite
It is no secret that Epic Games’ recent decision to announce a massive layoff (along with the closure of some of the games’ “metaverse” modes) has been extremely controversial amongst fans of Fortnite and of the gaming industry in general. These layoffs did not affect a small percentage of employees. Rather, over 1/4th of Epic’s workforce was laid off in a single day, with large positions now being open (such as the head of tech/coding, marketing director, and story director). Obviously, this has caused concern for the future of Fortnite Battle Royale and Epic Games as a company. Today, I would like to discuss what players might expect in the future for the popular live-service Battle Royale.
Disney has considered buying out Epic Games and #Fortnite, a new report suggests 🐭

Reporter Alex Heath has said that executives at Disney are split on the idea. A buyout would require Tim Sweeney to "call it quits on being an independent company," which appears unlikely. pic.twitter.com/NTFKqgzn96
A few days ago, a bombshell reveal by reporter Alex Heath was dropped on the business relationship between Disney and Epic Games. According to Alex, Disney has recently been considering a complete buyout of the company. Although this is just a theory, the recent layoffs and V-Buck Pricing Scandal may have been leading to this event. Epic previously claimed that these changes were necessary to “pay the bills.” However, it would make sense for Epic to “clean up” its company for Disney pre-acquisition. By doing this, Disney would likely view Epic as a more profitable business acquisition. Although nothing is truly confirmed, it is certainly an interesting concept. This concept, however, leads to another question. What would Fortnite be like under Disney’s control?
The most obvious thing I would expect to change is Epic’s collab release schedule. Regardless of how lenient Disney would hypothetically be, I think it would almost be guaranteed to see an influx of Disney collaborations in BR. In the worst-case scenario, Disney would bar Epic from collaborating with non-Disney IPs. While Disney does have a wealth of IPs at its disposal (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and The Simpsons, just to name a few), most Fortnite fans would likely get bored with collaborations with a select few Disney-owned properties.
Another thing that would likely change with Fortnite is its tone. Although Epic has never been a “mature” game, it makes references to and collaborates with properties that are not exclusively for younger audiences. With Disney in control of Fortnite, the entertainment juggernaut could attempt to sanitize the game to make it more “clean” than it already is. This would likely alienate players who appreciate the game’s current variety of collaborations/content.
Finally, price increases would arguably be likely with this acquisition. It is no secret that Disney likes money and would likely seize any possible opportunity to generate more income. The price increases under Epic’s leadership are already extremely controversial. However, if Disney were to alter Item Shop and Vbuck prices further, the backlash would be much stronger.
As for what will likely happen with the game now, BR seems to thankfully still be in good hands (based on Ted Timmons’ great communication/leadership). However, only time will tell how these layoffs will affect the future of the game. Epic truly needs to devise a firm foundation for the future of BR and lean into its strengths (varied gameplay mechanics, fun LTMs/side content, and interesting lore characters) in order to keep the game thriving. Do you think Fortnite will continue to live on for years to come, or will these layoffs be detrimental to the game’s health? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
