Terror Tuesday: Resident Evil Digital and Streaming Guide
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot was released just a few days ago, and the reception has been strongly positive. Although many die-hard fans were worried that the film would lose the charm and atmosphere of the original games, Cregger proved to many that he truly understands the franchise. Still, some may still be skeptical about the film’s quality, or prefer watching films at home. Since Resident Evil is a Sony-distributed film, we can actually predict approximately when Resident Evil should land on digital platforms.
Based on Sony’s recent release schedules, Resident Evil could see a digital release within 4-6 weeks, although Sony has yet to announce an official date. As an example, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, another Sony-distributed horror film, launched on PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) about a month after its theatrical run. If this theory proves to be accurate, fans can likely expect Resident Evil to hit PVOD by late October, just in time for the Halloween season.
On the other hand, for those waiting for streaming, expect a longer wait. Sony Pictures has recently penned a deal with Netflix, which will allow Sony to premiere their newest films on the platform. Sony usually premieres these films 2-3 months after the theatrical and digital releases, so expect Resident Evil on streaming services by mid December or even January of next year. Fans who don’t want to wait several months for streaming will likely have to wait a few weeks for the PVOD release, or simply buy a ticket to see the movie in theatres.
